ability to turn OFF inline editing

In-line editing drives me absolutely bananas, and I have to tell it each and every time not to do this, and sometimes I forget. I always want to reference previous versions so that I can go back and replace things on my own if I'd like. There should be a setting or a preference where we can turn this on or off, or even if we could manage it more minutely to the point of if it's a simple single line change then turn it on versus whole drafts getting rewritten in line, which is horrible for me!
